“Reef Heart” by Krista Ruffo

I will live
Not as a fish, swimming with the flow,
But as the coral,
Unmoving against the harshest of tides.
I will remain fixed and ready for whatever may be thrown against me,
And become a safehouse for those who may need me—
Those who float along and are lost in these dark waters—
So that they may seek shelter behind my brave structure.
The tide that buffers me, the sway of the world,
Cannot break what I have built up.
Soon the waves will be conquered
And those who sheltered under my wing
And under the confines of other reefs around me
Will grow so large
That the dark waters will not stand a chance
